The Winery’s Story
The estate and distinctive castle that give Castello Bonomi its name were built at Andrea Tonelli’s request in the late 19th century. After seven years imprisoned in Spielberg fortress for his role in the Carbonari movement, alongside figures such as Silvio Pellico and Piero Maroncelli, Andrea Tonelli regained his freedom through the intervention of the Queen of Austria. Returning home, he commissioned architect Antonio Tagliaferri to design this architectural jewel. In 1910, the Bonomi family bought the property from Bortolo Tonelli, Andrea’s last heir, and it became their country residence. It passed through the generations to engineer Marino Bonomi, who founded Tenuta Castellino in 1985. Restoring the family’s historic vineyard and converting an old arsenal built into Monte Orfano marked the beginning of the winery’s activities.
