The Winery’s Story
The winery began in 2000, when our family was discussing whether to sell the beautiful vineyards surrounding the house where I grew up. My grandfather Generoso acquired the vines in the 1960s, purchasing the highest part of the land in Contrada Solagna del Titolo, at the foot of Monte Vulture. Over the years, my grandfather and great-grandfather tended the vineyards, selling grapes and making wine for their own consumption. Our first thought was that six hectares were a serious commitment. We had almost decided to sell: both my parents are teachers, and my siblings and I imagined our futures away from Barile, continuing our university studies. There was no shortage of interested buyers, but at the last moment I had a change of heart. I could not bear to have the vineyards taken from before my eyes—our house stands among them—or see someone else’s name achieve something great with some of Vulture’s oldest vines, mostly between 55 and 60 years old, with some around 70. So I changed the plans for my life and my family’s. We decided to invest in our land and in the resource that had allowed my father, grandparents and great-grandparents to live and grow up in Vulture.
