The Winery’s Story
I was born in Bolgheri in 1965, a few years before the first bottles of Tenuta San Guido’s Sassicaia reached the market. Quickly becoming a new icon of Italian wine, it changed the future of Bolgheri and the upper Maremma forever. In less than a decade, the small medieval village, previously known internationally for its cypress avenue celebrated by the poet Giosuè Carducci, became one of the world’s wine capitals. Until the 1970s, Bolgheri’s countryside was supported by a rural economy with little connection to wine. Most fields grew vegetables, fruit or cereals, and wine was made for personal consumption. Terre del Marchesato’s story began in that earlier world, in 1954, before the association between Bolgheri and wine had become established. Families of farmers from the Marche moved to Bolgheri to purchase uncultivated plots. One of them was my grandfather, Emilio Fuselli. From generations of farmers, tenacious, experienced and capable, he invested the savings from years of work in a plot bought from Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, intending to grow vegetables.
