Online Wine Scams: How to Recognise Fake Shops and Clone Websites
Buying wine, booking a tasting and giving a food and wine experience online have become familiar habits. They also require care: fraudulent sellers can imitate genuine shops, copying their photography, design and wording to create convincing clone websites.
What is a clone website?
A clone website imitates an established business. It may use photographs of real bottles and wineries, copied descriptions, professional graphics and a domain name that closely resembles the genuine address. A small spelling change, an extra word or a different extension can be easy to miss. None of these details alone proves fraud, but an unexpected domain deserves a closer look.
Check the website address
Read the complete domain before paying. Compare it with the address published by the brand through its established channels. If the details differ, contact the business using independently verified contact information. Do not rely solely on a link in an advertisement.
Look for verifiable business information
Check the business name, company details, contact information and, where applicable, VAT number. Missing or inconsistent information is a warning sign. A professional appearance is easy to copy; a consistent, verifiable business identity is more useful.
Understand the payment method
Use a payment method you understand and read its buyer protection and dispute conditions. The availability of a familiar payment provider can be useful, but it does not guarantee that a seller is legitimate. Be especially cautious when a site pressures you to use a payment method offering limited ways to challenge a transaction.
Search for the business independently
Search for the brand and compare the results with the site you are visiting. Look for a consistent history, contact details and independent information. Search rankings alone do not establish that a seller is genuine, and an advertisement is not an endorsement of a shop’s reliability.
Question offers that seem implausible
An unusually low price for a prestigious bottle or premium experience should prompt more checks. Compare the offer, inclusions and conditions with the producer or established sellers before proceeding.
Take care with social media advertisements
Clone websites may be promoted through Instagram, Facebook or recently created profiles. Before purchasing, check the destination website as carefully as you would any other shop. A few minutes spent verifying the address, seller and payment conditions can help you avoid an expensive mistake.
